Blackpool boss has his say on ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker's mixed display against Lincoln City

Ashley Fletcher provided an assist off the bench in Blackpool’s 1-1 draw with Lincoln City - but also had a couple of moments he’ll want to quickly forget.

Shortly before setting up Kyle Joseph for the opener, the striker failed to place an unmarked header in the box on target against the Imps, as well as putting another effort straight at the keeper in the Seasiders’ late hunt for a winner.

The 28-year-old was also at fault for the visitors’ stoppage time equaliser, after being unable to challenge Tom Hamer in the air at the back post.

Fletcher has endured a tough few years, which includes a goalless stint with Sheffield Wednesday last season while on loan from Watford.

Despite marking his Blackpool debut with a goal away to Crawley Town, the forward has also had his struggles on the Fylde Coast, missing several big chances as well as being hit with a three-match ban last month for violent conduct.

Seasiders boss Steve Bruce was quick to praise Fletcher for one key moment against Lincoln, while also acknowledging where he could improve.

“I thought the movement for the goal was the biggest bit of quality in the game,” he said.

“It was a great run by Fletch to beat the offside and then he had the composure to pick Kyle out.

“He missed a chance with the header at the far post, but that little bit of quality he had made us the goal.

“He’ll be a little bit disappointed that he was beaten in the air for the corner (for Lincoln’s goal), but overall he made us a goal and that’s what he can do.

“He’s a striker, so if you miss chances you’ve got to have the courage to keep going back for them. He probably had another one at the end with the header, which could’ve been something to turn his season around, but he’s got to keep getting there.”
