These are the UK cities with the highest number of key workers

The Office for National Statistics has revealed the number of key workers within 15 UK city regions.

The figures come in the form of a percentage of the region’s population, with Newcastle, North Tyneside, and Northumberland topping the list (under the North of Tyne Combined Authority). A total of 35.9 per cent of the population there are in key worker roles.

At the opposite end of the list, with less than a third of its 1.3 million population working in essential roles, is Greater London Authority.

The percentage of each region’s population working as key workers are as follows:

1. North of Tyne Combined Authority - 35.9%

2. Tees Valley Combined Authority - 35.4%

3. Glasgow City Region - 35.2%

4. Swansea Bay City Region - 34.7%

5. Cardiff Capital Region - 34.3%

6. Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region - 34.1%

7. Sheffield City Region - 33.8%

8. West Midlands Combined Authority - 33.7%

9. West of England Combined Authority - 33.5%

10. Liverpool City Region Combined Authority - 33.4%

11. Greater Manchester Combined Authority - 33.3%

12. Rest of the UK - 33.2%

13. Aberdeen City Region - 31.9%

14. Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority - 30.2%

15. Greater London Authority - 29.8%

Key worker job searches

Additionally, personal finance experts at money.co.uk found that Google searches for key worker job roles had so far risen by 67 per cent during the UK’s lockdown period.

Among the most popular searches were vacancies for delivery drivers, which saw an increase of 475 per cent and care workers, which increased by 144 per cent, while searches for postal worker roles rose by 371 per cent.
