We had the first ever wedding at Owd' Nells new venue and it was simply wonderful
“We would absolutely recommend your venue to others and would like to thank everyone involved for playing such a big part in creating wonderful memories for us.”
The first couple to tie the knot at The Roundhouse at the former Guys Thatched Hamlet have described their wedding day as ‘wonderful’ as the popular venue’s renovations near completion.
Claire and Tom Roskell were married at the Canalside venue on Wednesday 28 October in what was described by Thatched Hamlet staff as a ‘bespoke ceremony’.
“The team went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly and that we had everything we needed,” the couple reflected. “The support, care and attention really made a difference and did not go unnoticed.

Dan Johnson, Operational Manager at the Thatched Hamlet, told the Gazette that everything ran smoothly as his team hosted their first major event: “I think the build up was more never-racking than the actual day,” he explained. “Everything went really well, and it was good to get it under our belt.”
The venue, which was formally known as Guys Thatched Hamlet, has undergone a major transformation since being taken over James’ Places earlier this year. A full re-thatching of the site’s roof will be finished in December, and renovations to the venue’s 46 hotel rooms are also ongoing.

In the spring, James Places’ reopened Owd’ Nells Tavern; complete with a refreshed interior, bar and menu. The outside seating area was repaved, a large canopy was installed and a vintage boat was put on display.
In September, James’ Places revealed plans to install an events marquee and build a mini-golf course on the former cricket pitch; Dan said that their ambition was to bring something ‘different’ to the area.

Under these proposals, the former cricket and bowling green pavilions will be converted into kitchen and storage space. Dan confirmed that the plans were progressing well, and that talks with potential contractors had already been held.
Bookings for The Roundhouse are open; the space can host weddings, parties, receptions and a range of other different events.
