Temporary roof on Boots store dominating skyline in St Annes town centre

Landmark shop building dates back to 1906

A temporary roof on a landmark store is dominating the skyline in the centre of St Annes.

The structure of plastic sheeting held up by various supports in the shape of a roof towers above the 120-year-old shop in St Annes Square - extending to almost as high as the nearby clock on the former Midland Bank, now part of the ongoing Sanctuary spa hotel development.

The temporary roof is to allow work on the latest stage of the major exterior refurbishment of the Boots store, which remains open throughout.

The store, of red brick with a striking frontage, was built in 1906 and has always been occupied by Boots, at one time including a library and tea room on the first floor, reached by a plush staircase.

One shopper said: “It’s a lovely building and great to see that it is getting some TLC.”
