£423k revamp sees Thornton's Gardeners Arms close ahead of major sports pub relaunch
A popular Thornton pub is closing its doors temporarily as part of a £423,500 refurbishment that promises to transform it into a big-screen sports destination.
The Gardeners Arms on Fleetwood Road North will shut on January 19 while work gets under way on a major revamp ahead of a relaunch under Marston’s new Grandstand sports pub concept.
The overhaul will see the much-loved community venue reimagined to deliver a stadium-style atmosphere, with giant screens, upgraded sound systems and tiered seating designed to give customers a clear view of the action.

Among the new features will be three-metre-wide screens, high-spec audio technology and a refurbished outdoor area fitted with TVs, allowing sports fans to watch live fixtures both inside and out.
Customers will also be able to order food and drinks via Marston’s new Order & Pay app so they don’t miss a moment.
Pub partners Andrew Smith and Joanne Plevin said they were excited to welcome customers back once the work is complete.
“We are so excited about the plans to re-open as a Grandstand pub,” they said.
“We know our locals are sporting mad and can’t wait to be able to offer them the best possible experience when they can visit us again.”
The refurbishment will also celebrate local sporting heritage, with the pub calling on the community to share memorabilia and photographs highlighting the achievements of local teams and sports stars.
Once reopened, the Gardeners Arms will show a wide range of live sport, including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, Formula One, darts and horse racing. Pool tables and dartboards will return, alongside new leagues and free-to-play sessions.
A new Match Day Menu will feature sharers and pub favourites, while the drinks range has also been refreshed, with all draught beers available in two-pint cups.
Local sports teams will be able to apply for a Black Card, unlocking exclusive offers and rewards.

Marston’s said the Gardeners Arms was selected for the Grandstand concept due to its strong links with local sports teams, community groups and charities.
The pub is set to reopen on February 11 with a brand-new look.
