Blackpool South MP Chris Webb has quashed rumours that the government is set to axe the free bus pass scheme, insisting that the Labour party is committed to not only keeping bus travel free for pensioners but to carrying out the biggest reform to England’s bus system in four decades.

After Keir Starmer refused to commit to maintaining the free bus pass scheme at Prime Minister’s Questions this week and insisting that all of the government’s financial plans would be laid out in the upcoming Budget, Labour MP Chris Webb has confirmed that free bus passes will not be cut.

He also came out against the government’s decision to slash the Winter Fuel Payments and pledged to fight for local pensioners’ interests.

“There are absolutely no plans from the government to get rid of free bus passes for pensioners and we have committed to keeping them,” he said in a statement. “Labour has in fact set out the biggest reform to England’s bus system in 40 years – creating a better service for all by putting power in the hands of the communities who need it the most.

“I did not support the government’s decision on Winter Fuel Payments and I have since sponsored an Early Day Motion calling upon the government to support those citizens with small occupational pensions that take them just above the threshold.

“This government is also protecting the triple lock on pensions, which saw the new state Pension rise by £900 in April this year. A further increase will be announced at the Budget in October.

“I am absolutely determined to do everything possible to protect vulnerable pensioners in my constituency and will fight for them at every turn.”
