Wyre residents encouraged to mark Remembrance Sunday in own way, as parades cancelled

Remembrance Sunday parades may have been called off due to the Covid pandemic, but residents in Wyre are still being encouraged to mark the occasion in their own way.

The council is encouraging people to observe a doorstep two minute silence on Remembrance Sunday, November 8, to remember those who fought for our country and gave their lives.

In line with national restrictions on numbers at events and restrictions on households mixing, the decision has been taken to prohibit large-scale events to mark these occasions in Lancashire.

Each year there are parades and services across Wyre, with a particularly large event normally held at Fleetwood's Memorial Park, but not this year.

Despite the changes this time, the council is encouraging residents to ensure Remembrance Sunday is still marked appropriately by taking part in remote Remembrance activity.

That could be watching the service on television or pausing for the two minute silence in their home or on their doorsteps.

Wyre Council will be airing a pre-recorded virtual remembrance service which will be led by the Reverend George Ayoma, minister at Trinity Baptist Church in Fleetwood, for residents to have their own Remembrance service at home.

Coun David Henderson, leader of Wyre Council comments: “This year we would like to encourage our residents to mark these occasions in a different way, to keep our community safe.

“On Remembrance Sunday the usual commemorative services will not be taking place in Wyre and we suggest that residents instead join us from their homes in a doorstep two minute silence at 11am.”

Residents are also encouraged to lay wreaths from November 1 to help spread out visitors to our memorial sites.

The Marine Hall in Fleetwood will also be lit red to honour the day.
