A specialist performing arts college is set to open in a former dessert parlour right across from Blackpool North Train Station.

Blackpool Theatre Collective Ltd is taking over the ground floor space at Bickerstaffe House, which was formerly occupied by Sprinkles.

The new college, which will concentrate on musical theatre and dance, is being opened by Ian Meeson and Carl Walker, two tutors who have worked in the profession and can offer valuable industry insight.

In the coming weeks the interior of the premises will be transformed into a bespoke rehearsal space, including a sprung floor for dance work.

Then, in September, the first two-year course for students aged 16-19 years olds –offering Government-funded BTEC qualification – will begin in earnest.

Already 12 young people have successfully gained places after auditions, and it is hoped that further auditions this month will fill the remaining places for a class of 15 to 20 students.

Ian, 48, who is originally from Blackpool, has spent tje intervening years working in the Wend End in musical theatre and as a drama teacher in Birmingham.

He is keen to be back in his home town and said: “Blackpool is a great place to bring the college and we can’t wait to get going.

“We are bringing something different here – our contacts within the profession will make a real difference.

"We are geared specifically to help these young people enter the profession, whether they head on to university, whether get an agent or just go straight into the business.

"All our students want to tar in the West End but during this course we will also show them other options in the industry that thy may not have considered -there are jobs out there on cruise ships, in pantomimes, in theme parks – there are many options.”

Carl, 39, from Tamworth in Staffordshire, has appeared in seven films, including cinematic releases Gulliver's Travels and Alice in Wonderland.

He said: “The BTEC is the equivalent of three A Levels so that provides the students with a direct link to university if that is the path they want to take.”

The pair are also both qualified examiners.
