New images as overdue £1.6m Pier Link project in St Annes finally approaches finish line

One-way markings now in place as latest phase of town centre improvement nears completion

These new images show the way forward for a town centre road refurbishment scheme as it finally approaches completion - now 12 weeks on from the originally projected date for its reopening.

Work on the £1.6m Pier Link scheme in St Annes began on February 23 and was due at the time to take 18 weeks, taking it to late June.

But residents and visitors have been left frustrated as the work has continued through the height of the summer season, including during major events such as the St Annes International Kite Festival and St Annes Carnival.

The stretch of St Annes Road West linking the Pier to the town centre has been closed to through traffic throughout and access restricted for pedestrians for much of the scheme’s duration.

Now, following overnight resurfacing last week, line painting has been carried out, notably included the one-way markings on the previously two-way stretch of road.

Once it reopens, drivers will be restricted to travelling away from town towards the pier and promenade, while cycling is permitted the other way.

The project, also including wider pavements, new planting and additional seating, is Phase 2 of Fylde Council’s St Annes Masterplan, following the £1.13m refurbishment of St Annes Square completed last year.

Fylde Council has not committed to an opening date for the Pier Link.

A spokesperson said as the resurfacing work was being carried out: “As with any scheme of this size, this is dependent on a number of elements including the weather coming together.

“We'll continue to update residents and businesses via our usual channels as soon as we have a firmer timeline.”

Other refurbishment projects are continuing in St Annes, at Garden Street and Orchard Road, and they are projected to be concluded in October.
