Katie faces her fears #likeagirl

I probably sounded like a bit of a ‘girl’ as I worried about heights and my appearance ahead of taking on the new Blackpool High Ropes course at Stanley Park.

I’m not big on lazy stereotypes though, so had to quickly ‘man up’ to try out its obstacles and challenges.

This 26ft high obstacle course challenges you to clamber across logs, through tunnels, around tyres and over ropes in a test of nerve and agility.

I’m not known for possessing a great deal of either. And I don’t much like heights.

So naturally I jumped at the chance to try it out.

It is exhilirating for sure. Throwing yourself off platforms and taking on impossible looking routes is great fun, but certainly takes some nerve.

“Think about Ellen MacArthur, she’s endured worse,” I was kindly advised beforehand.

While I’m not sure braving heights five times my own quite tallies with battling waves of the same size, as the record-breaking woman sailor must have done, the idea did prove fairly inspirational.

Amelia Earhart, the American aviation pioneer, perhaps she’d be a better role model to consider?

The height she flew at was probably the least of her concerns as she became the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928.

If I’d been ‘like a girl’ before, channelling strong women worked wonders as a motivator to detract from my fear of falling.

Admittedly, a couple of choice words accompanied my ascent from a ‘leap of faith’ platform, as they did while teetering along a wobbly log.

It also became a welcome distraction from the fact that from such a height, your shadow in the midday sun is insignificant when you look down at the expanse of hard ground below.

Rebecca Adlington, an Olympic medallist swimmer, unafraid of taking the plunge in the name of athleticism, was another inspiration.

If you too have been taken in by the new initiative #likeagirl, empowering women of all shapes, sizes and abilities to be unafraid to take up sport, then the High Ropes course is the perfect place to put views into practice. And it comes with spectacular views of its own too.

Sessions start at £8 for the Low Ropes, or £12 for Low Ropes, High Ropes and Zip Wire.
