'It's along the docks what do they expect?' reaction to sightings of rats in Fleetwood

“I bet most of you complained about the pest control man doing his job and are now surprised we are seeing more rats.”

A rat spotted scurrying around a Fleetwood supermarket car park sparked fresh concerns over the growing presence of rodents in the town.

The sighting at Asda has raised alarm among residents, particularly as an area on the seafront, near the Lower Lighthouse, is attracting vermin, and questions have been raised regarding what measures are in place to keep the area clean and prevent further sightings.

There have been a variety of views from members of the public since news of the sightings broke.

Kelly Batley said: “What do you expect? I bet most of you complained about the pest control man doing his job and are now surprised we are seeing more rats.”

Helen Molloy said: “Most wildlife has had their habitats destroyed by building. I’ve seen foxes on the main roads in London.”

Tracy Lynchney said: “I’ve seen a rat there a couple of times - it’s along the docks, what do they expect?”

Sophie Gorner said: “Well it is in an industrial area”, while Hazel Ogden made the point: “Yes, they are dangerous to people - that’s how the plague started years ago.”

Asda was keen to reassure shoppers that it isn’t an issue within the store itself.

An Asda spokesperson told The Gazette: “This sighting occurred in the car park of our Fleetwood store, which is located close to other food businesses and open areas.

“While sightings of this nature are uncommon, they can occasionally occur in outdoor environments. We want to reassure customers that we have not identified any issues within the store itself."
