The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has issued an update on an investigation sparked by the death of man in Blackpool Police custody.

A man in his 40’s, was arrested in Blackpool Town Centre on July 4, but later died after becoming unwell.
The man, who has not be named received medical attention at the police station as paramedics were called in.
But despite the best efforts of medics at Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he was taken by ambulance, the man originally from the Blackburn area, sadly passed away.

A spokesman for the IOPC this week confirmed the investigation was still continuing surrounding the death, including the actions and decision-making of police officers involved.
Speaking shortly after the investigation was launched, an IOPC spokesman said: “We have begun an independent investigation following the death of a man who became unwell while in the custody of Lancashire Police.
“At this stage we understand the man, from the Blackburn area and aged in his 40s, was arrested on Saturday (4 July) evening in Blackpool town centre and taken to custody.
“While in the custody suite, the man became unwell and received medical attention. Paramedics were called and the man was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he sadly died.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones, as well as all those affected.
“Our investigation, which will be carried out independently of police, is standard in such circumstances to understand events surrounding the death, including the actions and decision-making of police.”
Lancashire Police have also been contacted to ask if any officers have been suspended in connection with the incident.
