'I'm committed to bringing Kirkham Baths back to life' - Fylde Council commits £150k to kickstart the work

Fylde Council has approved £150,000 of urgent works to stabilise and protect Kirkham Baths, marking a significant step toward bringing swimming facilities back to rural Fylde.

Fylde Council has formally committed to safeguarding the future of Kirkham Baths after approving £150,000 worth of essential works designed to protect the historic building and prepare it for potential reinstatement.

The decision, made at a Full Council meeting on Tuesday, November, 25 will see urgent safety and preservation measures carried out at the site, which the Council took ownership of earlier this year following its transfer from the YMCA.

The investment will prevent further deterioration and support detailed surveys that will guide future decisions on wider funding and redevelopment.

The contract for the works has been awarded to Warden Construction Ltd, with activity set to begin in early 2026.

The programme includes asbestos removal, environmental cleaning, drainage assessments, structural surveys and the removal of water-damaged materials.

These early interventions aim to minimise escalating costs and ensure the building is properly prepared for the next stages of development.

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “This investment is not just about holding the line - it is about preparing Kirkham Baths for a new chapter.

“We are determined to do all we can to bring swimming back to rural Fylde, and these enabling works are a vital step in that journey.

“Alongside our finance team, we are modelling different investment scenarios and working with our MP Andrew Snowden to secure wider government interest.

“I have also written to Lancashire County Council to seek financial assistance in light of their duty towards public health.”

Councillor Jayne Nixon, Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, said: “We know how much Kirkham Baths means to residents.

“These works will give us the clarity we need to develop the best possible solution for the community.”

The Council also continues to plan future swimming provision across Fylde, with procurement for a new operator at St Annes progressing ahead of an appointment expected in April 2026.

Although no final decision has been made about operations at Kirkham, its inclusion in the review reflects the Council’s commitment to reopening the baths if funding can be secured.
