Fylde Coast teacher on the brink of finishing 'world's toughest' Clipper Around the World race
“I have found it tough, exhilarating, emotional, challenging - everything!”
A teacher from the Fylde Coast is about to finish one of the world’s toughest endurance sailing races, despite having no previous experience.
Wendy Greaves, a secondary school teacher from Lytham, will finish the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in Portsmouth on Saturday (25 July), having spent the last year at sea racing 40,000 nautical miles.
Founded in 1995 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the Clipper Race consists of 10 purpose-built race yachts manned by a professional skipper, first mate and 22 other non-professional crew mates.

Wendy, who has been racing as part of Team Warrant, led by South African Skipper Dylan Kotze, said: “It feels like Level 4 Training (the final of four compulsory training levels all crew must complete before taking part) being only five nights and close to the UK!
“I have found it tough, exhilarating, emotional, challenging - everything! I do love the sea but I’ve decided I am more coastal than ocean,” She added. “I had never sailed before, and it has definitely got me into sailing - I want to carry on sailing now.”
Wendy and her team will arrive back to the UK on Saturday when they sail into Portsmouth harbour.
