Everything you need to know about Ride the Lights 2026 in Blackpool including date and route

One of Blackpool’s most popular annual events is set to return later this year, as Ride the Lights takes over the Promenade.

The free cycling event will take place on Tuesday, September 1, giving thousands of people the chance to enjoy a preview of the Blackpool Illuminations before the official switch-on later that week on September 4.

For one night only, around six miles of the Promenade will be closed to traffic, allowing cyclists and walkers to experience the famous lights without vehicles.

Participants can join the route at any point between Starr Gate in South Shore and Red Bank Road in Bispham, travelling as much or as little of the distance as they wish.

The event runs from 7pm to 10pm and is open to all ages, with families, friends and visitors encouraged to take part.

Ride the Lights is not a race, but a relaxed and community-focused event, with organisers encouraging participants to decorate their bikes with colourful lights, lanterns and creative displays.

A VisitBlackpool spokesperson said the event “allows participants to cycle along the famous Promenade after dark, enjoying the full spectacle of Blackpool Illuminations without traffic”, adding that it has become “a highlight of the town’s calendar” and offers “a unique way to experience the lights”.

Safety measures will be in place throughout the evening, including marshals, first aiders and support vehicles. All bikes must have a white front light and a red rear light, and children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The tramway will remain operational during the event, and participants are advised to take extra care near North Pier and the Metropole Hotel.

The road will reopen to traffic at 10pm, with riders asked to plan their journey accordingly.

More details about this year’s Illuminations and associated events are expected to be announced closer to the date.
