Police were called to reports a man had been assaulted at an address in Stanley Avenue at around 7.45pm yesterday (Tuesday, August 11).

The 89-year-old was at home when the intruder demanded money after entering the property through an unlocked widow.

The offender then punched the victim, knocking him to the floor, before stabbing the man in the neck and arm.

The victim - who sustained "nasty" injuries as a result of the violent attack - handed over cash to the assailant who then made off from the scene.

Detectives have now released shocking images of the man's injuries in the hope they will encourage people to come forward.

Det Sgt Steve Talbott, of Blackpool Police, said: "An elderly member of our community has been the subject of a vicious assault and detectives have been working around the clock exploring a number of different enquiries.

"We would urge anyone reading this appeal to study the images carefully. The clothing worn by this person is distinctive, in particular the rucksack he is carrying. We believe someone will know who this is.

The man was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for treatment after the vicious assault, but officers have confirmed he is recovering well.
