Coastguard confirms major response to incident on Fleetwood beach

“When we receive reports of anyone in difficulty, we don't judge who, how, or why, or guess what we might need. We respond with everything we have”

A major incident took place last night at Fleetwood Beach as 11 coastguard officers, three police cars, three ambulances and a fire engine responded to an incident on the sand.

It is believed that the emergency services attended the scene sometime between 5pm and 6pm.

Responding to claims of the large emergency response on Facebook, Mark Sumner, Station Officer at HM Coastguard Fleetwood, said: “11 vehicles with a Coastguard connection (attended the scene). 3 equipped rescue vehicles from the Fleetwood team and 8 officers heading direct to the scene to save precious time

“When we receive reports of anyone in difficulty, we don't judge who, how, or why, or guess what we might need. We respond with everything we have. Today, we were joined by police, ambulance, and the fire service.

“Locating, rescuing, treating, and evacuating a casualty across a beach takes people. 6 just to carry each stretcher. We never know if we're dealing with an individual or a group in difficulty.

“Sometimes it's a simple task, sometimes it takes everything we have, and more. We never know for sure until we arrive and there's no time to waste asking for additional resources.”

Lancashire Police, North West Ambulance Service and Lancashire Fire and Rescue have all been approached by the Gazette for comment. More updates to follow.
