'I suspect a few are still drying off' - Blackpool's Hawes Side Academy students enjoy annual residential trip

“Each year, we organise these trips to enhance and extend our children’s learning.”

Pupils from Hawes Side Academy in Blackpool have returned from their annual residential trip with new skills, stronger friendships and some rather soggy teachers.

The children took part in a series of activities designed to build confidence, resilience and teamwork, including canoeing, archery tag and the giant swing. They also tackled a vertical obstacle course, testing their rope skills and climbing to heights many had never experienced before.

While some challenges proved difficult, pupils showed determination by persevering, encouraging one another and supporting friends who were struggling.

One of the highlights was the school's traditional recycled fashion show, where children transform their teachers into catwalk models using recycled materials and any available equipment. The only requirement is that the outfits must be waterproof. The designs are then put to the ultimate test, with buckets of water thrown over the teachers as pupils look on.

Residential Lead Alex Fleckney said: “Each year, we organise these trips to enhance and extend our children’s learning. Having organised residentials for many years, it is clear that children return with greater resilience, determination and improved critical thinking skills.”

Principal Caroline Boothroyd said: “Residentials are a big part of our curriculum at Hawes Side. Children come back more confident and more willing to have a go, and that attitude makes a difference as they get ready for their final year with us.

“Watching them support each other through the harder moments was brilliant, and I’m grateful to the staff who give up their time to make it happen. I suspect a few of them are still drying off.”

The residential also provides opportunities for pupils and teachers to build relationships outside the classroom, helping strengthen connections that continue when they return to school. Hawes Side Academy, which is part of Endeavour Learning Trust, already has residential trips booked for the coming years.
