Blackpool Sci-Fi model maker who worked on Transformers and Power Rangers makes miniatures for new project

“The images will eventually end up in a book.”

A movie model-maker and photographer who spent much of his retirement crafting for blockbuster films has created a series of ‘miniatures’.

Richard Dixon’s miniatures have been included in sci-fi books and a feature film out next year as well as a book he has put together documenting his work.

When many would be thinking about winding down their careers, Poulton man Richard found himself making models and tiny figurines to be filmed using some of the latest sci-fi movie technology.

Back in 2021, Richard landed the role of production designer for the space miniatures in a new British flick called Infinite Worlds by film maker Simon Cox.

The ‘amphibious tank and a flying Subcraft’ are two examples of his work and they will be included in his latest book along with photographs of specially made puppet characters and other creations spurred on by help from local artists.

He photographed some of them on Cleveleys beach, in the same location where the Star war spin-off series Andor landed a few years ago.

He said: “The superb beach location and clear horizon proved good for filming and back in the studio, trees and rocks and more distant coastline were added.

“The images will eventually end up in a book.”

He first became interested in photography when he was a boy. His grandfather was a keen photographer and his encouragement underpinned a career which has seen him work in the ever-evolving toy industry.

Through the years he has photographed to promote big names such as Action Man, Bratz, GI Joe, Transformers, and Power Rangers.
