Blackpool-born frontman of legendary alt rock band The Cure Robert Smith promises two new albums

“The third one is weird, actually.”

Rock band The Cure will release two new albums in the near future, according to their Blackpool-born frontman Robert Smith.

In 2024, the goth rockers released their first album since 2008 to rave reviews and huge chart success all over the world. Now Smith has announced the band recorded enough material for two further releases.

The Cure have already been announced as headliners for multiple festivals across Europe, as well as a headlining show in Edinburgh. Robert Smith clearly had fun guesting with Olivia Rodrigo at this year's Glastonbury and his band would be a popular choice for Reading and Leeds.placeholder image

When songs of a Lost World hit the charts two years ago, Smith said there were enough songs created to fill a second release. But this week, on BBC 6 Music, Smith revealed the band were working on a third album from songs recorded during the Lost World sessions.

Smith said that, although Cure fans were eagerly awaiting new material from the band, no release date had yet been decided on.

He did, however, reveal that production work on the next album had been completed and it was due to be delivered to Universal - the Cure’s current label.

Smith says the album will be darker than Songs of a Lost World and described it as “a mature work by a reflective band”.

The third record, he added will be far more poppy but denied it had anything to do with his recent work with pop star Olivia Rodrigo. Smith said: “The third one is weird, actually. Now I’ve been doing this, people think. ‘ah, it’s because he’s been working with Olivia’. because the third one is actually really upbeat.

“It’s really poppy, but it doesn’t compare melodically to the stuff that Olivia does, but it’s my idea of Cure pop. It’s probably 20bmp slower than anything she does.”
