I joined The Star as a reporter in July 2023, and graduated from the University of Sheffield’s Journalism Studies course in the same month. I was proud of achieving a first class degree, as well as a Gold Standard NCTJ Diploma, and an award for producing the best final project in my year.
A lot of my work for The Star and freelance projects have focused on health and social issues. I have covered topics such as addiction, gender inequality in healthcare, and problems in nursing homes, which often involved reporting on inquest court cases.
I am also responsible for combing through meeting notes from NHS Trusts, to ensure that information about any issues, as well as positive developments, are accessible to the public. I believe this type of public interest journalism is really important, especially at a local level, and should be more of a priority than ever in a changing digital and commercial landscape.
I have always had an interest in politics, and have reported in depth on the impact of the housing crisis on people in Sheffield, interviewed MPs, covered elections, attended and reported on protests, and spoken to countless people who have dealt with obstacles in getting the social care or housing that they need.
Along with staying for work, I decided not to leave Sheffield after university because I felt I had a lot to see and do here that I hadn’t yet - particularly because after I moved here in 2020, there was another covid lockdown within days. The nature, culture, people and climbing are keeping me here for the long haul.
