RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch is back - here's how to take part

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, which has been running for more than four decades, takes place between January 29 and 31.
And there is still time to register for the event which monitors the health of the nation’s bird populations.

Hide AdParticipants are asked to spend an hour counting the birds in their gardens or surrounding area and submit their results to paint a picture of bird acitvity in gardens across the country.
It's a perfect opportunity to connect with nature during lockdown, from the safety of home, whilst making a real difference to important research into the nation's bird population
New for this year sees experts from across the UK bring photos, footage and facts about the birds they see, as well as answering questions. Plus, there’ll be live quizzes, and familiar faces throughout the weekend in the online event.
The Big Garden Birdwatch survey also provides an insight into any overall decline in the numbers of bird species.

Hide AdWhile the house sparrow retained its top spot as the most commonly seen garden bird in 2020 with nearly 1.3m sightings, historic data from the Great Garden Birdwatch shows this is an overall drop of 53 per cent.
