Blackpool's Sandcastle Waterpark splashes into the record books

The Sandcastle Waterpark splashed into the history books on Sunday not just breaking but smashing the world record for the most people down a waterslide in one hour.

A stunning 529 people rode the Duelling Dragons slide in 60 minutes, meaning the Sandcastle team busted the old record by more than 100 brave riders.

The previ ous world record of 396 riders was set in 2014 by the team from Beerze Bullen in The Netherlands.

The Sandcastle will feature in the Guiness Book of Records, with a team of officials having stood poolside to adjudicate the record attempt.

An appeal went out last week for riders to join the attempt which is part of a month-long birthday celebration.

And the Sandcastle team were amazed by the response.

A spokesman said: “The biggest thank you goes to everyone who turned up and rode the slide and who can officially claim to be part of a world record breaking team.

The Sandcastle opened on June 23, 1986, replacing the iconic South Shore open air baths. The venue’s month-long birthday celebrations have included a special mother and baby lifesaving classand a live radio broadcast from the famous wave pool.

Boss John Childs released 30 balloons on the Promenade and cut a cake to celebrate the big day

The 30-year-old attraction has also thrown open its doors to dozens of local charities and groups allowing those who wouldn’t normally have had the chance to enjoy the water and thrill rides the chance to take the plunge.

The Sandcastle team has also invited residents to join in with the World’s Biggest Swimming Lesson.
