The spectacle was due to be staged next month but members of the gala’s committee agreed it could not go ahead with current anti-Covid restrictions in place.

Work will now start on next year’s event.

Committee chairman Holly Moorhouse said: “This year has been hard for all members of the community, and we look forward to being able to celebrate our 124th year when we return on Sunday, June 12, 2022.

“There have been so many unsung heroes over this past year who have put themselves on the front line to support all members of the community, and we would like to use our next gala day to thankyou all.”

The cancellation came after similar statements from organisers of galas across the Fylde coast, including in Poulton and St Annes. Fleetwood’s event, meanwhile, will be held online for a second year in a row.

Holly added: “Next year we will have our special guests who judge our entries, walk at the front of the parade, have lunch, and a front row seat to watch our crowning ceremony.

“This year we would love for people to nominate an unsung hero to be a special guest on the day.”

Nominations can be emailed to secretary Helen Moreton, telling the committee who is being put forward and why. Guests must be available to take part in the gala. The address is [email protected]

Holly added: “We are under no illusion how much work it will take to get this event up and running again after a two-year hiatus and we will only be able to do this with the help and support of the local community.

“I want to personally give a big thank you to everyone who has continued to support us over these past few years, and I cannot wait to be able to you all next year.”

Holly also appealed for potential new committee members and volunteers to email Helen.
