Resident Evil Revelations 2 Episodes 3 and 4 Review

Returning to Resident Evil Revelations 2 felt weird. Its episodic structure made me feel like I needed to finish this thing. Episode 2 left on a cliff-hanger so coming back for me was a must. So I did. I wasn’t surprised or overwhelmed with any excitement in doing so, I just needed to close this chapter and stick the game on my shelf once and for all (digitally of course although the boxed version is available now). Capcom didn’t do a great deal to make episodes 3 and 4 feel any different than the first 2, infact I was faced with more of the same gameplay and the same graphics. Saying that, you wouldn’t like a game to suddenly become good or bad in the middle of it would you? So I expected more of the same.

Anyway, Claire and Moira’ story carries on at the entrance to the tower that seems to be in the dead centre of the mysterious island. The bracelet’s voice has to be coming from there. So we traipse through the same feeling corridors fighting the same feeling enemies except from the impressively grotesque monster you fight at the end of episode 3. Co-op remains as tight as before with 2-player local split screen the more popular choice as co-ordinating in the same room is great fun, unless things are going terribly wrong and then you can bitch-slap your mate for not giving you that herb you so desperately needed.

Barry and Natalia is still a different experience as using Natalia’s recon ability which allows you to see enemies through walls makes for a more tactical approach to hunting the fodder roaming the halls. The invisible enemies are a welcome challenge now they are more frequent. Things in the world seem different. They seem as though it’s far into the future as the tower looks like it’s been shelled a few times. I won’t give the end away but it’s satisfying. There are a few more Capcom puzzles to break up the zombie killing like moving boxes to reach higher places and using Natalia’s ability to crawl through small spaces to unlock doors or collect items for Barry but nothing stands out as truly challenging. Thankfully the story is enough to keep you playing. Where the hell is this voice coming from? Who is it? Why has she brought Claire and Moira to this island? And as Barry and Natalia, what has happened to Claire and Moira? All of these questions get answered throughout the latter 2 episodes bring Resident Evil: Revelations 2 to a nice and satisfying conclusion.

The credits roll with a feeling of accomplishment but little else. There is no overwhelming feeling to go back or replay the story again. Thankfully Raid mode is there for those wanting more hell on. Played co-operatively on solo, Raid mode is survival. Clear out enemies without healing which, as you can expect, gets tougher and tougher. Each win earns you a medal and I have surpassed 100 with no sight of the end so this mode will keep your interest as you can unlock some cool characters.

One things for sure, Resident Evil Revelations 2 comes to a nice satisfying conclusion answering all those questions you had in episodes 1 and 2. Getting to them though is like walking to start your shift at work, facing the same people and past the same environments. Raid mode provides extra longevity and a nice challenge with some cool rewards. A great end to a not bad game.
