Last Night of the Proms meets Madchester in all new music spectacle Sound on the Ground at Blackpool Cricket Club

More than 20,000 music lovers will descend on the Rose Bowl Ground of Blackpool Cricket Club for a first of its kind live spectacle on August Bank Holiday weekend.

Bosses have announced a brand new event ‘Sound on the Ground, a two-night headline show with performances from the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro on Saturday August 28.

Sunday 29 will see a rewind to Madchester’s classic Hacienda days of the 80s and 90s promising a spectacular mix of hits from the likes of Robin Maynard (Robin S), Crystal Waters, Black Box and Inner City together with world renown DJs Graeme Park and Mike Pickering.

The ambitious musical spectacle, a first for the club, has already surpassed the expectation of organisers, overwhelmed by the response to the event.

Blackpool Cricket Club chairman Dave Cresswell said Sound on the Ground had been more than two years in the making with the hopes of building an ‘iconic and high quality’ concert for Blackpool.

He said: “The spectacle of the world famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra together with the 80s and 90s music of the iconic Hacienda Classical playing at Blackpool’s cricket ground is something that I’m sure people will not want to miss.

“Early demand for tickets has already surpassed the expectations of the club and it is looking very likely that both days will be a sell-out.”

Profits made from the Sound on the Ground, like the club’s annual premier bonfire display, will be ploughed back into the club to support with its ongoing development.

Dave added: “The club has worked extremely hard over the last two years to bring such a high quality and entertaining two-day concert to Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.

The local council, licensing, police and fire authorities together with numerous organisations have been greatly supportive of our plans.

“This is great news for the local economy with many out-of-town visitors expected to make a weekend of it and of course locals benefiting from the opportunity to see top class performers on their doorstep.

“Local cricket and sport in general has had a tough time over recent years, especially the last 12 months with lockdown restrictions.

“It is important the club plans and generates financial growth for future development of the club both in terms of facilities and to increase the take up of cricket and other sporting activities in the area. “

He explained: “With the massive re-development of the club presently taking place, we have already been able to continue our status as a County Cricket out-ground for Lancashire this will ensure first-class cricket being played on our ground in the future years.”
