Oli named prize asset after Fylde's farcical display

The young player plaudits went to second row Nick Gray, while Jordan Dorrington won a prize donated by supporter Peter Twigg for the best player in away matches.

The presentations took place at the Woodlands after Fylde’s narrow, unconvincing win over relegated Wharfedale.

Player-coach Paul Arnold admitted to finding aspects of his side’s play “farcical” and “lacklustre”, but praised his team-mates for fighting through to the end.

Arnold said: “We got out of jail a bit. At times we ended up throwing the ball away and not respecting it, as though we were playing sevens. We had one pass through the legs and one over the shoulder – it was farcical. We knew Wharfedale were a decent side and had nothing to lose.

“We won that game by playing for 10 to 15 minutes. When we did, we were clinical. We showed how good we could be and showed a great attitude.”

Arnold gave his side a verbal volley at half-time and came on for the second period to exert an influence.

He said: I gave them a bit of a roasting at half-time. It was not acceptable. It had looked like we were quite happy to attack but in defence we were lacklustre.

“The only good thing at half-time was that we were only 12-0 down. It could have been more but the second half was all us.

“At times we still rushed it and looked as though we were panicking. In the last four or five years, we have always seemed to struggle against teams at the bottom.”
