Adam Lewis scored one of Fyldes tries against Preston Grasshoppers

Putting unimpressive league seasons behind them, both clubs fielded a mixture of players from across their senior sides, with frequent substitutions, which made for an entertaining open game of 10 tries.

Fylde took that battle by seven touchdowns to three, but led by only 17-7 at half-time and then 22-7.

That was before they pulled away to collect the trophy named after their free-scoring winger, who died tragically young from mouth cancer.

The game started in odd fashion with both sides having a player sinbinned for deliberate knock-ons in the first 10 minutes.

But when it settled down, Fylde centre Tai Tupou, a former rugby league star with New Zealand Warriors, bagged the first try.

Hoppers hit back through winger Jacob Browne, but scrum-half Matty Kaye and prop Leyton Taylor added two more for the hosts.

Tupou and Browne both scored their second touchdowns after the break, before Fylde added three more through wingers Ollie Brennand and Jake Foster and prop Adam Lewis.

South African AJ Potgeiter, a fly-half who is joining Fylde from Bury, kicked a couple of conversions.

James Mawdesley got a consolation try for the visitors, with Lewis Allen landing a couple of conversions.
