Although a formal launch of the foundation has been delayed by the pandemic, it has been in operation since March developing programmes ready for the resumption of rugby activities.

Fylde chairman Dave Young, one of the foundation's seven trustees, explained: "The objective of the foundation is to improve access to rugby union on the Fylde coast and beyond by offering opportunities for participation and appreciation of the sport – regardless of age, sex, religion or background – built around rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline, and sportsmanship.

"We want more people to benefit from what rugby is all about and the positive impacts it can have on their lives.

“We hope to achieve this through the provision of high-quality, participation-based programmes for all ages and abilities. The essence of what we are doing is ‘Rugby For All'."

The foundation has already received its first two grants: one for a project aimed at the over-55s and the other is for a breakfast club for vulnerable children and children of key workers.

Although based at the club, the Foundation will operate independently of Fylde RFC. It will have its own bank account and all funds raised by the foundation will by used by the foundation. It also has its own website: www.fylderugbyfoundation.com

The other six are: David Craven (Honorary Life Member of Thornton Cleveleys RUFC), Sir Bill Beaumont (Chairman of World Rugby and Honorary Life Member of Fylde RFC), Tony Attard OBE (CEO of Panaz and former High Sheriff of Lancashire), Martin Long (Partner at Napthens Solicitors and Chairman of the ancashire Committee of the Wooden Spoon Charity), Matt Price (MD, Community Group) and David Wiseman (Hon Secretary, Fylde RFC).

Fylde RFC aims to be the leading community rugby club in the North-West and established its Community Rugby Department in 2018.

Young added: "Our short-term aim was to re-engage with local schools, colleges and the wider community, and in the longer term to create a foundation for this purpose.

"By April 2019 we had an active presence in 18 schools and FE colleges across Lancashire and a regular programme of sports camps and community-based events.

"To take things to the next stage we started talking to businessman David Craven, who has a passion for rugby and the benefits it brings. David has championed our cause and we are delighted that over the last few months we have established the charitable foundation."

The foundation works in partnership with Community Group, which specialises in operating community departments and developing community coaching programmes.

Its MD Matt Price said: “The formation of the Fylde Rugby Community Foundation is a monumental occasion as we aim to build a lasting legacy for rugby and sports in the area and beyond.

"I am truly excited by what we can achieve and offer to our community, not only in participation but a chance for businesses and people to get involved in our projects.”

The charity will be looking for sponsorships and donations. Anyone wishing to get involved or find out more can do so via the website.
