Fylde coast golf review: President's week at Knott End, and how to drive more like Bryson De Chambeau

Captain's events at Herons' Reach and Knott End

The first event on Thursday saw the Ladies play for the President’s Prize and the winner was Karen Lee with a nett 73. Sylvia Wilson was runner-up (74) Qand Carol Kershaw third (75). The best gross winner was Joanne Kay with 86 and the best score for a 37-54 handicapper was Janet Gorry’s nett 83.

The Presidents Prize to the Gentlemen was won on Saturday by Chris Lonsdale with 41 points.

Division one winner: Ross Stevens 37, 2nd Sam Moss 36, 3rd Ian Hey 35

Division two winner: M Bond 38, 2nd S. Ralston 38, 3rd K Hughes 35

Division three winner: Bryan Fearn 37, 2nd Malcom Crane 36, 3rd Dan Bass 36

David then hosted his Presidents Mixed Prize event on Sunday, won by Stephen and Elaine Blackburn with 67.8

Runners-up were Sylvia Astbury and Michael Armer (69.8) and third David and Sylvia Wilson (71.6).

No presentations were made this year but the president congratulated all of the winners.

The gentlemen also completed their singles and doubles knockout competitions.

The singles was won by Steve Richardson and Bob Veitch was runner-up, while - Matthew Haworth and James Duggan won the doubles (Matthew Prance and Rob Higgins runners-up).

After his dominant win at the US Open, everyone is again talking about how far Bryson De Chambeau is driving the ball and asking whether it is good for the game.

If you’re reading this, I’m sure you’d love to have that problem.

Getting extra distance from the tee can make a huge difference to your scores, so how can we all drive the ball a bit more like the Winged Foot winner?

If we can increase the distance the club travels in the downswing, then it has longer to accelerate, so making a bigger turn in our backswing is vital.

To do this, turn your back foot out slightly at address, then during the backswing turn your hips away as much as possible.

This means allowing your back leg to straighten and your front heel to rise off the ground.

If you can get your hands four inches further on your backswing, this will result in an increase of 2.5mph and a longer drive by over five yards.

And try to swing the club quicker on your downswing. Even if it feels a little out of control to begin with, many golfers pick up more than 20 yards straight away by doing this.

Overall winner of the Ladies’ 18-hole stableford at Fairhaven GC was Yuyao Wang (division three) with 39 points.

The division one winner was Anne Preston (34) and for division two Mandy Whittingham (37). Anne Weston won the nine-hole stableford with 17 points.

Overall winner of the Men’s Medal with Andy Tiso with a 70.

Division one winner was Jim Fisher 72 (runner-up Simon Long 73), division two winner Don Moore 73 (David Cartmell 75) and division three winner David Fuce 75 (Glynn Driver 77).
