Blackpool cricket captain fearful for future of league clubs

Seamer Gleeson, 32, who was still playing his cricket for Blackpool six years ago, was among 55 players and seven from the Red Rose county selected for England training this summer.

Five of those Lancashire players have made the group of 30 for the three-Test series, starting at Southampton before two Tests at Emirates Old Trafford.

They are James Anderson, who has been recovering from injury, Jos Buttler, Keaton Jennings, Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson.

Mahmood and Parkinson have represented England in limited overs cricket but never in Tests.

Gleeson and Red Rose team-mate Liam Livingstone, who was also in the 55, will again be considered when the smaller group is named for shorter formats.

With such a large group to manage, head coach Chris Silverwood and assistant Graham Thorpe have been handed a reinforced backroom team of head coaches from the county network.

Lancashire's Glen Chapple is among them and will help to mentor the pace bowlers.

The other uncapped players in the 30 are Lewis Gregory, Dan Lawrence, James Bracey, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Overton and Amar Virdi.

The group will convene at the Ageas Bowl on June 23 and remain on site as they work towards an intra-squad match on July 1-3.
