Bidding to reach the last 32 of any event for the first time in almost two years, Cahill lost a final frame shootout against the Welshman.

The match, played behind closed doors at Milton Keynes’ Marshall Arena, ebbed and flowed throughout after Day had taken the opening frame with a break of 113.

Cahill hit back immediately, however, squaring the match with a run of 58 before taking the third frame to open up a 2-1 lead.

Day responded with a break of 68 giving him the fourth frame before winning the fifth to move one away from victory.

It was Cahill’s turn to bounce back with a run of 69 seeing him clinch the sixth frame to make the score 3-3 and set up a decider.

However, it was Day who emerged victorious and booked a place in round three, where he was subsequently beaten by Kurt Maflin.
