Blackpool netball sharpshooter Eleanor Cardwell can't spare England from defeat by world champions

Blackpool's Eleanor Cardwell was in top shooting form but could not save the England netball team from defeat in the opening Test away to world champions New Zealand today.

The Bispham-based Manchester Thunder sharpshooter started at goal attack for England in thefirst of three Tests in Hamilton.

And Cardwell, 25, did her utmost to keep the Roses in contention but New Zealand were always in control of a match they won 58-45.

An England squad lacking several experienced players competed well in adversity: this was the Roses' first international since January and they have spent the past fortnight isolating in their hotel, having travelled to New Zealand without head coach Jess Thirlby, who tested positive for coronavirus.

The remaining Tests take place on Friday and Sunday.
