The home of English football would be largely empty this time if Town were to account for Wycombe Wanderers in the semi-finals and then overcome either Oxford United or Portsmouth in the League One decider in the capital.

But the achievement would be all the greater than 2014 as a place in the Championship awaits the play-off winners.

This is how we reported Town’s League Two play-off final victory over Burton Albion six years ago...

Fleetwood chairman Andy Pilley received the perfect birthday present as the Cod Army secured yet another promotion.

Antoni Sarcevic’s goal with 15 minutes to go was enough to sink Burton 1-0 in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

The midfielder’s 35-yard strike fooled Albion goalkeeper Dean Lyness and clinched an incredible sixth promotion in 10 seasons for the Highbury club.

In 2005 Fleetwood were playing Ramsbottom in the North West Counties League. Next season it will be Sheffield United, Coventry and Preston North End.

Fleetwood Town bossed the opening half but couldn’t find a way past Brewers keeper Lyness.

Two saves in the first three minutes from the Burton stopper denied David Ball and captain Mark Roberts as Fleetwood pressed from the off.

There were penalty claims as Ball and Matty Blair tumbled within seconds of each other.

There was goalmouth drama, as Town found a repeated outlet in the relentless running of Ball.

But there was no way through, with those early chances the best Fleetwood could muster and Burton giving up nothing in a winner-takes-all encounter.

Ball came close within a minute of the restart before Burton gradually battled back.

Billy Kee had an extraordinary chance to score when he found himself on the end of a long ball into the Fleetwood box, firing over from close range.

But it was Sarcevic who sealed the win, with a sweetly-struck free-kick from fully 30 yards.

Fleetwood saw out a nervous last 15 minutes to ensure they will play League One football next season.

And manager Graham Alexander ranked his first managerial success as highly as any achievement in his long and distinguished playing career.

“It’s right up there,” he said. “Everyone works hard for any success in football and it feels the same for players and managers.

“It’s down to the ambition of the chairman, who took over 11 years ago, and always believed we can smash though any glass ceiling put above us.

“It’s the chairman’s 44th birthday as well, so it’s a double celebration. I’m hoping the trophy is enough of a present!”
