Norcoss cricketer Lucy makes history

Lucy became the first female to play for one of the senior sides at Norcross last weekend ... and at the age of 14

Lucy played for the Second XI, becoming the first female to represent the cub in the Palace Shield, and also turned out for the Sunday XI the following day.

The Sunday side combines juniors with more experienced players and again Lucy became the first female to feature in the team.

The Sunday match was against Fleetwood, a club her grandfather used to play for, and Lucy bowled three overs. Fleetwood won the match by 16 runs.

In the previous day’s Palace Shield division four match, Lucy was a member of the Norcross Seconds side which lost to Longridge Fourths by four wickets at Norcy Park.

Lucy has recently joined the Ribble Valley Vipers ladies’ team and has played at Read & Burnley CC.

She is the third generation of Garlicks to play for Norcross following in the footsteps of her grandad RG Garlick, who played for Lancashire and Northamptonshire, then served as club professional at Fleetwood and St Annes.

Dad Roger Garlick is a Norcross stalwart, batting and bowling for the Seconds as well as coaching the juniors.

Saturday was a great family day out, with father and daughter in the Norcross team and Lucy’s sister Emily scoring.

Lucy’s other grandfather Malcolm Newton also played for Norcross before becoming an umpire.

Roger said: “I am so proud of the hard work Lucy has put in over the winter and summer nets, plus playing for our Under-15 and Under-13 sides.”
