“What you can do is fix it for the next game”: Beaten AFC Fylde now prepare for top-two battle

Craig Mahon wants his AFC Fylde players to pick up the pace as they prepare for tonight’s National League North top-two showdown.

The Coasters travel to leaders South Shields, looking to atone for last Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Oxford City.

That leaves them six points behind the pacesetters, who drew 2-2 at Marine and have played a game more than Mahon’s men.

Speaking after their weekend loss, Mahon told Fylde’s media team: “After a game you’re always emotional and you’re always thinking what you could have done better, but I just don’t think we were at it today.

“I think it’s one of those games where we didn’t turn up, we didn’t do the basics right and we probably got what we deserved.

“They were structured, organised, they sat in a mid to low block. We tried to break them down and we just didn’t have any of the quality that we’re used to having.

“I think our tempo was a little bit slow. You can’t change what’s happened, what you can do is fix it for the next game and I’m sure myself, the lads and the staff will all be looking forward to that one.

“We just looked really lethargic, we just looked like we never really zipped the ball like we have done.

“I thought, at points, people were taking too many touches which means, if we take too many touches, they can get back into shape.

“I think we just didn’t move the ball quick enough and our decision making in the final third wasn’t good enough.”
