What will deadline day hold for Blackpool?

The Pool manager has made three permanent signings during the current window, besides completing loan deals to bring in Watford striker Uche Ikpeazu and keep Bolton full-back Hayden White for the rest of the season.

McDonald is expected to hold talks with further potential signings before the 11pm deadline.

The Pool boss said: “Let’s see what’s round the corner on Monday. I’m happy with the squad I’ve got, so we’ll see if we can do any business.

“If we can add to the squad on Monday it will be a bonus but I think we have quality in our squad now, which is great for me.

“I’ve tried to keep my cards close to my chest but there really isn’t that urgency now. I am much happier with my squad than what I was at the start on January.”

That’s understandable after two wins and two draws from their last four matches meant Pool ended the month five points clear of the League One relegation zone in 18th place.

One deal which remains in the pipeline concerns Burton goalkeeper Dean Lyness, though terms were agreed almost two weeks ago.

The deal for Lyness, who had a successful loan at Bloomfield Road before the turn of the year, had hinged on fellow keeper Kyle Letheren leaving Pool and that is looking less likely. It’s understood Burton are becoming impatient and Lyness is desperate to leave the Pirelli Stadium, where he is now only third choice.

The 24-year-old has started to look at alternatives, though a deal with Pool could still be struck today.

But having sounded confident last week, McDonald said: “Dean did well with us but it’s not looking like anything is happening with that one at the moment.”

Some of Pool’s squad players who are believed to be keen to move away from Bloomfield Road have not been allowed to do so as yet.

Charles Dunne and John Herron have signalled a desire to head out, though McDonald would want replacements for both.

“The squad is there or thereabouts now,” he said. “If anyone leaves we’ll have to top it up, but we have good competition all over the park now.

“The phone doesn’t stop. I’m constantly being offered players by agents and Mondday will be no different. If something pops up, then it will be a bonus.”

Even if no further business is done today, McDonald insists he’s now much happier with the squad he has built after signing Oldham’s Danny Philliskirk and Mark Yeates as well as Will Aimson from Hull on permanent deals.

He said: “I think our squad now is much stronger than it was before the start of the month.

“We’ve recruited well considering we were relegated last season and had to build from scratch.

“We’ve added players in January who have made a difference and I think we have good competition.”
