Tough new rivals can't scare Fleetwood's Bolger

Fleetwood player of the year Cian Bolger says Town's historic campaign is a platform the club can build on next term.

Town finished fourth in the League One table, but face a tough task to emulate that next season in a division that sees Portsmouth, Plymouth and Doncaster coming up from League Two, with near neighbours Blackpool possibly joining them through the play-offs.

Former Premier League clubs Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic have been relegated from the Championship, along with Rotherham.

But despite more big-budget clubs joining a division that already contains Scunthorpe, MK Dons and Charlton, Bolger says Town have something to build on to try to secure that historic first promotion to the Championship after missing out in the League One play-offs.

He said: “There is loads to build on. We can take confidence from the season we have had and hopefully we can kick on next season.”

Town lost out 1-0 to Bradford in a two-legged semi-final and Bolger says they are proud of what they achieved, however dejected the players may be.

He added: “Obviously we are disappointed. We gave our all – you could see that on the pitch – but we just fell short.

“There is a lot of disappointment but I think we can be proud of what we achieved.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to be where we are, so we can hold our heads high and look forward to next season.

“Obviously it’s disappointing to fall short at the last hurdle but we are all very proud.”

Fleetwood club secretary Steve Edwards has stepped down.

Edwards, a well-known and respected member of staff, made the club aware back in November of his wish to leave at the end of the League One season.

Edwards’ involvement at Town dates back more than 20 years as a player, reserve team manager and most recently as club secretary.

A club spokesman said: “Everyone at the club would like to place on record their sincere thanks for his contribution and would like to wish him all the very best for the future.”
