Barton had been in charge of Town for two-and-a-half seasons.
Indeed, the club's statement on his departure simply announced his exit and wished him well, the entire statement consisting of two short sentences.
However, the now-former Fleetwood manager did release his own statement via the League Managers’ Association.
In it, Barton thanked the chairman, coaching staff, fans and wider Fleetwood community, admitting: “I am not naive enough to think I always got it right, but my only intention during my tenure was to drive this football club forward.”
“I would like to thank the chairman Andy Pilley for the opportunity to manage Fleetwood Town, ” acknowledged Barton in the statement. “I am just a football manager who has lost his job, there are plenty of people who were much better than me at theirs that have lost them over the past 12 months.”
Last season, the former Newcastle United man lead Fleetwood into the League One play-offs where they were defeated by Wycombe Wanderers in the semi-final.
But talk has turned towards who will fill the void left at Highbury Stadium by Barton's departure.
Here, we take a look at what the bookies are saying about the vacant Fleetwood Town managers job and the names that have entered the betting.
