Taylor: Fighting spirit is key for Blackpool

The 30-year-old produced a stunning set-piece in the 91st minute to earn his side a dramatic late draw.

Taylor, who joined the Seasiders in the summer following his exit from Walsall, has been an ever- present at left-back this season but Saturday’s goal at Bloomfield Road was his first for his new club.

He said: “I was delighted to get my first goal but the main thing is that we didn’t come away with a defeat. That would have been unthinkable with the domination we had.

“I knew it was very late on and I just thought I would try and whip it to the far stanchion because sometimes the keeper steps the other way. Fortunately it went into the top corner.

“Although I scored, it was the team that kept going – that spirit and togetherness will take you a long way.”

The goal was the least Blackpool deserved after yet another dominant display on home turf, though Cambridge looked set to nick a smash-and-grab win courtesy of Luke Berry’s stunning 30-yard free-kick.

Taylor added: “The overriding emotion is one of frustration. I think it’s fair to say we dominated the game, had the majority of the chances and most of the possession.

“But it didn’t quite fall for us and they’ve scored a brilliant goal which gave them something to hold on to.

“But we showed really good character and spirit to keep going and going, but it wasn’t quite happening.”

Taylor said the manner of the fightback said a lot about Gary Bowyer’s squad.

“I think it shows what a good group we’ve got,” the former Blackburn man said.

“It’s hard to pick too many faults with the performance.

“We haven’t conceded many chances but we’ve created numerous chances ourselves.

“Not only that, we had some really good bits of play.

“It wasn’t quite dropping for us – there was the penalty miss and the chances we missed, so it’s a very frustrating afternoon.

“But no-one is going to put the ball in the net for us. We’ve got to keep making chances and keep believing the goals are going to come.”
