Evans, whose Gate side sit ninth in the NWC premier division, told The Gazette: “You’ve got to take into account the health issues and respect what’s going on in the world.

“From a selfish point of view, I wish football was still going ahead and we were still able to play, but there are a lot more important things going on.

“Because we had a good run of games that weren’t called off, we’ve only got six left to play. It wouldn’t make a huge difference to us because we’re not involved in the promotion or relegation side of things. We’re quite safe in the middle.

“As for this season being null and void, the question is what they would do about promotion next season. This season we had three going up from our division, and next season it was supposed to revert to one going up automatically and one via play-offs.

“Financially, though, ending the season early is massive. We’ve still got bills to pay like anybody and the rent on the property. With no income coming in at all that’s absolutely massive. The club would budget for a full season and everything falls into place on the back of that.”
