Slocombe: Don't dream Cup tie's all over

The National League North side come to Bloomfield Road looking to cause another FA Cup upset after dumping out League One side Gillingham.

Slocombe admitted Gary Bowyer’s men can’t afford to take this game for granted.

“These are massive games for these type of clubs and that’s no disrespect to them,” Slocombe said.

“I think Brackley have beaten Gillingham twice in this competition now in recent years, so we have to be right on our game and understand it’s going to be a tough game.

“They’re going to really enjoy coming to a top ground like this and playing on a good pitch.

“Hopefully, as long as we match their endeavour, our quality can really show.”

Slocombe revealed that, as a Manchester United fan, a trip to Old Trafford would be his perfect third round draw – but stressed the need not to get too carried away.

“We have to concentrate on this game first and we can’t think ahead,” he said.

“It’s a nice incentive but if you look beyond the game you can become complacent. We’re not really a team who has done that up to now.”

Slocombe tasted FA Cup success last season when he played between the posts for Oxford as they beat Premier League side Swansea City 3-2 at the Kassam Stadium.

He said: “I’ve had a few ups and downs in the FA Cup, like most who are in the lower leagues. I’ve had a couple of first round knockouts and a couple of derbies.

“Last year was fantastic at Oxford. We managed to beat Swansea which was a great achievement and a great day.

“Granted they made changes but they still brought a great team full of international players. To beat them was a great day for us.”

Slocombe is in a rich vein of form at the minute after saving a penalty during Blackpool’s 4-1 win against Newport County last weekend.

“It’s nice to make a save to help the team get a result, be it a penalty save or a save in play,” Slocombe said.

“We try to do some work because as a keeper you want as much information as you can to give you the chance to make that save.”
