However, Town’s interim boss says he is satisfied with the depth of the squad at Highbury once everyone is fit and available.

Chairman Andy Pilley has promised his full support as Wiles bids to earn the job on a permanent basis – and that includes backing him in any dealings before the transfer window closes on February 1.

Striker Kyle Vassell arrived last Friday on loan from Rotherham United for the rest of the season, though injuries and Covid continued to restrict Wiles’ options for his first three games in charge.

Speaking before Tuesday's defeat at MK Dons on the prospect of making further signings, Wiles said: “If it’s appropriate, yes, but with the squad depth we’ve got, when players start returning I couldn’t be happier.

“I think we have a lot of variety and a lot of players who can play in different roles, and for me, we have a number of players who can impact games of football .

“It’s just down to us and the staff to make sure we are picking the right players for the right games.

“When selecting teams we also have to consider how players are feeling with the physical output because we have been putting in high-energy performances.

“So we just have to make sure we utilise the squad as best we can and I’m really happy with where we are.”
