Sheridan: I haven't thought about keeping Fleetwood job

It has prompted talk of Sheridan being given a longer deal at Highbury – his current contract runs out at the end of the season.

However, he said: “No, I’ve not spoken to the chairman. It’s the last thing on my mind.

“I’ve still got a job to do. I’ve still got to get those last couple of points to make sure we stay in the league.

“I’m just bothered about the team and winning games. I’m not thinking about anything else. Whatever may be will take care of itself.

“It’s not crossed my mind. I’m here until the end of the season and while I’ve got a job to do, I’ll carry on doing it.

“I’m not thinking about anything beyond that. My aim is just to keep the team going in the right way.”

Fleetwood’s upsurge in form has seen them climb to 13th in the table, nine points clear of the dropzone.

But Sheridan, whose side travel to play-off challengers Rotherham United tomorrow, believes Town may still be a point or two short of confirming their safety.

He added: “Our aim now is just to win the next game. I don’t think 51 is quite there. I still feel we probably need another couple of points.

“So it’s important we go into the next game trying to win it. We want to try to get as many points as we can and as quickly as we can.

“I don’t think the lads are going to give up now they’ve reached 51 points – plus I won’t allow them to be like that anyway.

“I’ve said to them that I want us to win as many games and to stay unbeaten for as long as we can.

“We’re going into a tough game at Rotherham thinking we’re going to win. We’re on good form and we have a bit of confidence.

“The points on board are where we want to be but I still feel we need another point or two.

“We just try and keep the unbeaten run going. It will end somewhere but we’re going into games thinking we’re going to win.

“That’s the sort of confidence we’ve got at this moment in time.”

One successful change made by Sheridan has been to reintroduce the 3-5-2 wing-back formation which served Fleetwood so well last season.

That has seen right-footed attacker Ash Hunter operating at left wing-back and developing a strong partnership with centre-half Cian Bolger on the left side of the defence.

And although that switch for Hunter came literally out of left-field, Sheridan says he knew exactly what he was going to get from the 22-year-old.

The Town boss said: “What Ashley does is gives you 100 per cent.

“He is playing in a position that is new to him and he knows it is part of a team effort.

“He’s involved, he gets forward and he’s defending. “He wins headers and he’s tackling.

“What he always does is gives you lots of energy and he’s got quality too.”

Hunter’s goal in Monday’s home win over Bristol Rovers was the eighth this season for a player who was finding starts hard to come by in the first half of the season under Uwe Rosler.

He has cemented his spot in Sheridan’s side and the head coach won’t be leaving him out as long as he continues to strike the ball so well.

He added: “Ash’s goal on Monday is very similar to his goal against MK Dons in my first game in charge.

“For the size of him, he strikes one hell of a ball and first time as well.”

Wigan Athletic have dominated the Sky Bet EFL League One awards for March, with team boss Paul Cook named manager of the month and defender Chey Dunkley player of the month.

It means disappointment for Fleetwood Town head coach John Sheridan and goalkeeper Alex Cairns, who were both on the three-man shortlists.
