Little time for Town to focus on transfers with matches coming thick and fast

Fleetwood Town defender Sam Stubbs is on course to line up against his boyhood club Everton, and his father Alan Stubbs made over 120 appearances across four seasons with the Toffees.

There will be a host of Liverpudlians in the Fleetwood squad for this Carabao Cup third-round tie, with allegiances on both sides of Stanley Park.

Unfortunately for Stubbs, 21, family cannot be in attendance tonight but he knows they will be watching on Sky Sports... and should be on Fleetwood’s side.

He explained: “I don’t think we’re allowed any family in, which is a shame. There are a few scousers in there, so they’ll be in the same boat.

“My dad’s going to watch it with the family somewhere. It will be a bit weird seeing me playing against them.

“I think he’ll be cheering for Fleetwood – he’s always been like that wherever I’ve gone. It was like that last season when I was playing for Hamilton against Celtic (another of Stubbs senior’s clubs). He said it was a little bit strange then. I think he’ll be Fleetwood...

“There are more Blues than I thought here – everywhere else I’ve been there were more Reds.

“But regardless of it being Everton, it’s a Premier League side and I think everyone wants to try and get one over on them.

“It’s an opportunity for us to go and get a result. Obviously a lot of people will be backing Everton, and probably rightly so in terms of the quality that they’re bringing.

“As much as it is a good occasion for the fans and for the club, it’s also work.

“At the end of the day, it’s about progressing to the next round.”

Everton have won their first two Premier League games after a summer spending spree and manager Carlo Ancelotti made 10 changes for last week’s cup win over Salford City.

Whtever side Town face, Stubbs is focused and said: “I think there will be changes. Ancelotti has said he’ll be bringing in a few players from injury but there will be quality in that team.

“It will be an Everton team that can punish you at any given time. We’ve looked at who may play and stuff like that, but I think it’s important that we don’t concentrate on them too much.

“There is quality throughout the squad at Everton and that doesn’t really change whoever is in their team.”
