Town’s 2-0 victory at Scunthorpe on Saturday not only lifted them above the Iron into an automatic promotion spot in League One – as well as extending their unbeaten league run to 18 games – but also saw them beat their record points tally for the third tier.

The 63 points achieved in the 2014/15 season has been surpassed with 11 games of this campaign to go.

“I was waiting for that question,” said Rosler, when asked what the next target was going to be. “I don’t have the answer but I’ll sit with the players in the week.

“I had a meeting with the chairman about targets and those targets had never changed. First it was 50 points as quickly as possible and the next target was the third round of the FA Cup.

“We achieved that and then the next target was the best points total ever.

“Now we’ll sit down with the players but it’s important they are on board with it. It’s us deciding what can be achieved but myself and the players are ambitious.

“There is no midweek game, so we’re hoping to have players coming back from injury for a strong squad with more options.

“I’ll tell you the next target will be ambitious but also achievable.”

Goals in each half from Devante Cole and Bobby Grant at Glanford Park sealed the win, though Stephen Dawson had an ‘equaliser’ for the hosts harshly ruled offside.

Town’s victory was achieved without Amari’i Bell, who was injured against Northampton seven days earlier, which allowed former Liverpool youngster Joe Maguire to impress on his debut.

“It was a tough place to come,” Rosler admitted. “Kyle Dempsey wasn’t supposed to start because he hadn’t trained for three days but he got himself fit in the last few seconds. Joe came in and how the squad adjusted to that situation against a top team was fantastic.

“We started really well and should have been ahead in the first 15 minutes. After that they took over and Alex Cairns made one or two crucial saves.

“Second half, they had the ball but didn’t create much. We knew we would have another chance on the counter-attack and we were clinical.”

Second-placed Town closed the gap on leaders Sheffield United to five points, while opening up a four-point lead over fourth-placed Bolton, who visit Highbury on Saturday.
