Town’s 18-game unbeaten run ended with a 4-2 home defeat on Saturday, when Fleetwood fell foul of Bolton’s fine set-piece delivery.

But it was a set-piece of their own that clinched a vital win at Walsall, Cian Bolger heading the only goal after 22 minutes.

The 1-0 win kept Town in the second automatic promotion place with nine games to play, though Bolton picked up another four goals at Gillingham to remain just a point behind with a game in hand.

And Scunthorpe are up to fourth and just two points further back after ending their torrid run with an injury-time winner against Rochdale..

After losing Devante Cole and Ash Eastham to injury, Rosler handed Godswill Ekpolo his first start since November and was delighted with the display against a Saddlers side who had won their previous six home games.

He said: “It was disappointment (against Bolton) in that we did not deal with set-pieces but not in terms of how we performed and played football.

“We carried on the good play from Saturday into the first half at Walsall.

“I think we played really well and we should have been up by more than one.

“We hit the bar and had the ball cleared on the line. We had another two players missing, another two on our injury list.

“The players who came in and the players who normally start all did a tremendous job.

“In the second half we did what we had to do. At times we were shaky but not very often.

“They had not one shot on target and we still had chances on the counter-attack.

“To come through that game today, when a lot of people think ‘I’m not sure after Bolton how they will respond’, is an absolute delight for me.

“I’m delighted for the players and for the whole club that we bounced back in that fashion, with another two players missing.”
