An inspection was carried out at Spotland just before 11am with Bolton-based referee Darren Handley quickly deciding the surface was unplayable.

The writing was on the wall when a pitch inspection was announced at 11am on Friday. Dale groundstaff are understood to have put frost covers on the pitch on Friday night but to no avail.

Town may well see the postponement as a blessing in disguise with their squad paper thin and boss Steven Pressley struggling with injuries.

But the respite is short lived, Fleetwood travel to Colchester on Tuesday for another vital clash at the bottom of League One.

The trip to Rochdale is likely to be re-arranged for a date in February.
