Readers' vote: Your Post-'66 England XI verdict
You voted in numbers for your favourite '˜Post-1966 England XI' in our web poll this week.
None of Gareth Southgate’s semi-final class of 2018 made the final selection though, with the nineties the most heavily represented decade.
Peter Shilton beat Ray Clemence, David Seaman and current No.1 Jordan Pickford to the gloves.
And in midfield Paul Scholes and Bryan Robson didn’t get a look in as Steven Gerrard and Paul Gascoigne got the nod.
David Beckham was the popular choice on the right flank.
Even England’s all-time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney was overlooked up front.
Here’s the XI you voted for:
Peter Shilton; Gary Neville, Terry Butcher, Rio Ferdinand, Stuart Pearce; David Beckham, Paul Gascoigne, Steven Gerrard, John Barnes; Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker.
And to manage them? Bobby Robson was the overwhelming choice, beating Gareth Southgate, Terry Venables and Sven-Goran Eriksson.
