The midfielder, 33, joined the club from Bury this summer and has made more than 300 first-team appearances for the likes of Stoke City and Leeds United in his career to date.

Bowyer admitted: “It wasn’t easy, there were some other great candidates - Andy Taylor, Tom Aldred and Jim McAlister - but we’ve gone with Danny.

“I would like to get to the stage where we could have 11 captains on the field.

“Danny is a great example for everybody here in terms of how he conducts himself both on and off the pitch. He’s vastly experienced and has been there, seen it and done it.

“I’ve been very impressed with him ever since he’s been in the building. We’re delighted that he’s our captain and hopefully he can get us off to a winning start.”

Left-back Taylor will be Blackpool’s vice-captain.
